An MDB team member participated in a charity home building in southern Kentucky in June. The receiving family of five had a combined income of around $21,000 and lived in a trailer with significant mold, leaks, and electrical issues. Knights of Columbus from Church of the Nativity in Burke, VA partnered with the Appalachian Construction Crew based in Omaha, Nebraska to provide the funding and build a new home for the family over a period of two weeks. Weather cooperated, and teaming with a local electrical, heating/air conditioning and plumbing contractors, the team of 27 framed, sided, roofed and roughed in the interior of the house, to include drywall, in 5 ½ days. A finishing crew of nine completed all the drywall finishing, painting, hanging doors, trimming, and installing kitchen cabinets the following week. All inspections were completed a week later, and after the Nativity-provided appliances and beds arrived a few days later, the family moved in June 24-26.
